LLIN CAMPAIGN ROLLED OUT IN 20 DISTRICTS IN WESTERN UGANDA
Ibanda - 22/07/2017- Ministry of Health has rolled out wave 4a of the Long Lasting Insecticide mosquito Net (LLIN) Campaign in 20 districts in Western Uganda. In this wave, a total of 4,488,874 nets were distributed protecting 8,193,076 people.
The districts covered in this wave are; Bushenyi, Hoima, Ibanda, Kabale, Kamwenge, Kiruhura, Kisoro, Kyegegwa, Kyenjojo, Ntungamo, Rubirizi, Rukungiri, Mitooma, Buhweju, Isingiro, Kanungu, Kabarole, Rubanda, Kibaale and Kakumiro.
During the mini-launch of the campaign at Ibanda District Headquarters, the District Health Officer, Dr. Jonas Bamwine urged locals in the region to embrace appropriate use of nets in order to Chase Malaria out of Uganda. “Malaria negatively impacts socioeconomic activities of our population. Let us sleep under a mosquito net and avoid contracting Malaria” Bamwine advised community members.
The mini-launch was graced by the presence of Miss Uganda 2016/17, Leah Kagasa who urged youth to take lead in the Chase Malaria campaign. “Youth, you should encourage your elders and young ones to sleep under a mosquito net in order to avoid Malaria” Kagasa said.
The National Malaria Control Program manager, Dr. Jimmy Opigo added that Government of Uganda is doubling efforts to sustain and reduce morbidity and mortality related to Vector Borne diseases in Uganda.
Uganda is conducting the second Universal LLIN Coverage Campaign as one of the interventions to reduce the burden of Malaria. The campaign has reached over 50% of implementation with 87 districts in Northern, Eastern and parts of Western regions successfully covered. A total number of 18,269,327 nets have been distributed protecting approximately 33 million people.
This campaign is supported Government of Uganda, Global Fund, DFID through UNICEF, USAID/PMI and Against Malaria Foundation. Under this campaign, one net will be distributed per two people in a household.
